💡 Why this topic matters

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by persistent difficulties in social communication and interaction, along with restricted and repetitive behaviours such as stereotyped movements, insistence on sameness, restricted interests, and sensory abnormalities. Symptoms are present from early childhood, cause functional impairment, and are not better explained by intellectual disability alone.

Primary care plays an important role in ASD because it is often the first point where parents raise concerns, making it essential for developmental surveillance, early identification, family psychoeducation, and referral coordination. Early intervention is associated with better outcomes.

By the end of this CME, participants should be able to recognise early red flags of ASD, conduct developmental surveillance in primary care, use screening tools appropriately, identify referral pathways, initiate early management while awaiting specialist assessment, and support caregivers through multidisciplinary care coordination.

✍️ What You’ll Learn:

  • Spot early signs of autism.
  • Screen effectively in primary care.
  • Refer confidently and appropriately.
  • Support families while awaiting assessment.
  • Facilitate early intervention for better outcomes.
